Council responsibilities

The council is responsible for all council services and duties, which include Social Services, housing, education and planning. If you’ve a specific question for this council, please visit their website to get contact details for key departments.

Islington N1 Council Tax Rates:

Council Tax is worked out by your local council who sets the Council Tax rates for each year. Your property postcode will determine which council you will need to pay. There are currently 2 councils covering the Islington N1 area.

Council tax rates for each Local Authority

The average council tax charges for April 2010 - March 2011 are listed below, based on a household of two adults. The tax bands are based on the value of your property in 1991.

Every home in the borough is in one of eight valuation bands (A to H). Your bill shows which band you’re in.

Your council tax charges are worked out as a percentage of the band D rate, as shown in the table below. The total band D rate is worked out by dividing the money to be raised by council tax (£84.6m) by the number of band D equivalent homes in the borough (87,968).

Tax Band

2010/11 full council tax charge

A

£847.80

B

£989.09

C

£1,130.40

D

£1,271.69

E

£1,554.29

F

£1,836.89

G

£2,119.49

H

£2,543.38

How much will I have to pay?

Each year, every local authority will set a rate of council tax for each valuation band. The amount you have to pay depends on the value of your property and the current rates for your local council. Not everyone will have to pay the full amount of council tax. There are three ways in which your council tax bill may be reduced.

You may be able to reduce your bill if:

  • the property is empty
  • only one adult lives there (Usually 25% reduction in the rates)
  • you are disabled
  • you are a student (100% exemption if studying full time - you are enrolled to attend a course of education lasting for at least one academic or calendar year - and which you are normally required to attend for at least 24 weeks out of the year and study for at least 21 hours per week during term time)
  • A nurse
